The WCC (Wound Care Certified) is a nursing certification awarded by NAWCO.
NAWCO publishes the official exam outline, eligibility rules and fees — see NAWCO's official page before you book.
In our 1000-card WCC deck the heaviest topics are Management (25%), Assessment (17%), Diagnostics (16%) — that is how this deck is weighted, not the official blueprint, so use it to plan practice and check NAWCO's exam outline for the real weighting. This guide shows where the material gets hardest, which topics to practise first, and a 5-step plan built on active recall.

These are genuine cards from the heaviest-weighted topics above. Answer each one before you reveal it — that is what active recall means in practice.
Which specific epidermal layer is found only in the thick skin of the palms and soles, providing additional protection against friction?
Show answer →Stratum Lucidum. This clear, thin layer of dead cells (keratinocytes) sits between the Stratum Corneum and Stratum Granulosum. Clinical Pearl: It contains eleidin, a protein that eventually converts to keratin. Exam Tip: If a question mentions thick skin or specific locations like soles, look for Stratum Lucidum as a distinguishing anatomical feature.
Which layer of the dermis is most superficial, contains the highly vascularized dermal papillae, and facilitates the exchange of nutrients with the avascular epidermis?
Show answer →The Papillary Dermis. It is the thin, upper layer of the dermis composed of loose connective tissue. It contains capillary loops that provide oxygen/nutrients to the epidermis and help regulate body temperature. It also houses Meissner’s corpuscles (light touch). Strategy: Distinguish this from the Reticular Dermis, which is deeper, thicker, and provides mechanical strength via dense irregular connective tissue.
In patients with uncontrolled diabetes (hyperglycemia), how does the formation of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) affect the dermal collagen fibers?
Show answer →Hyperglycemia causes non-enzymatic glycosylation of collagen. Glucose molecules bind to collagen fibers, creating abnormal cross-links (AGEs). This makes the collagen stiff, brittle, and resistant to normal turnover/remodeling. Result: Decreased skin elasticity and impaired wound healing. Clinical Pearl: This stiffening is why diabetic skin is more prone to breakdown under pressure and why wounds are often stalled.

These 3 topics alone account for roughly 58% of our 1000-card WCC deck. Time spent here pays off more than anywhere else.
Answer questions before flipping to the answer — that struggle is what builds retention. Start with the 30 free WCC cards, then work through the full deck one category at a time.
After a full pass, re-drill only the cards you missed. Small categories are quick wins — closing a weak topic can be an afternoon's work.
Our deck rates 500 cards as hard. If those feel comfortable in your final two weeks, you are studying above test level.
